Seems it only does it when cold like after just setting off.

When approaching a junction or traffic lights I tend to roll up and put it in neutral and then stop, but when I put it into neutral it drops to about 700 for a second or two then goes back up to normal 900

Any idea? Is this normal when the engines cold?

Check your engine bay and see if there's an aftermarket BOV which vents to atmosphere like Si says above.

The problem you describe is called 'hunting' and happens to quite a few owners... mine is prob due to SSQV not recircing and dumping to atmos but I'm convinved my lighter flywheel struggles to keep revs at decent level when clutch is dipped... sometimes the engine stalls when I'm accelerating hard and shift but don't move into the next gear quick enough?! :wack:

Exactly as said above normally caused by BOV (dumpvalve) dumping the air and not recirculating it. Or dirty MAF sensor.
