not really, here is the system, it's a fair bit more complicated than you think hence not wanting to remove it :-

I've just the whole lot in place. It's not doing any harm by being there and I persoanlly like having everything in place that should be there. Pointless, maybe. :)

There is that electronically controlled valve on the R/H rad mount bracket too, or is that the one near the tank in your diagram?

That line is the petrol tank vent line. You can cut it and just let it vent on the chassis rail, rather than letting it go into the engine bay. You need this line to open to the atmosphere, do not block it up. You also need an anti-roll valve somewhere in case the car is upside-down, then fuel won't leak out. I think that the valve DeanS15 has pointed out in his diagram is the anti-roll valve, but I'm not 100%.

More progress -

Got myself some more prop to diff bolts from japperformanceparts :)

Started the prep work now, which I thought is the easy bit...but tbh rubbing down for a few hours starts to ache your arms after a bit :D

The whole underside needs treating but there are a few main areas like so -

I began to rub down using a wire brush and made a good start -

Then I decided to switch to electric for a bit

This baby looks like it could do some damage on a high power drill

and so it did...

I need to pay a few more visits to the car and continue rubbing down..get most of it off I can then I will wash it down with Surfex HD from Bilt Hamber and then apply the Deox Gel to the hard to get / stubborn places. After that and im satisfied with the results I will move on to priming with Electrox.

Very good work mate. It will be well worth all of the effort when it is back together. And in 10 years time!..

Good work mate. I bet your arms hurt after holding them up when grinding all that rust off! Also try and do it sections of grinding and painting. You don't want to leave the exposed metal without a primer on it for too long, especially outside.

Yep they did start to ache! I also got a face full of crap every now and again...good job I decided to ware goggles

I know I did think about that, hopefuly it will be okay for a week or 2..im planning on doing abit more work on it thursday, then after some deox gel it will be time for primer as it can go on with up to 10% rust present anyway...think I will get the top bit where the tank goes in primer then as I still need to work on the lower section and towards the middle / front of the car plus sills and that would leave the rest exposed for too long.

You should always wear goggles mate, I've learnt the hard way as I got a bit of metal in my eye from angle grinding and had to go and wait 4 hours in A&E before someone removed it with a needle - not a nice ordeal.

I had that done before, except i was closer to 8 hours in A&E , and then when i did get seen, the doc put some local anesthetic in my eye and f**ked off for about half an hour, my eye went numb, but he was gone so long it was regaining normal feeling by the time he came back, then he proceeded to stick a needle in my eye!!!!!! not at all pleasureable, i can vouch for that!

I've recently done exactly that too. I was bothering to wear goggles but when i stopped I put them up onto my head and forgot to put them back down after. Started grinding and got a face full of ****. Thought little of it until about 3 hours later and had a very sore eye! I could see it in the mirror but just couldnt get it out myself. Went to A&E and luckily got seen within about 10 mins. They had a look and found 2 lumps in one eye and one in the other! So in with the anaesthetic and they scraped it out with a needle. Not nice at all!

I've had loads of things fly into my eyes when milling things at work and it bloody hurts, although I've always managed to get the metal out. One of the other fella's wasn't so lucky though, he had a spray of metal go into one of his eyes using our balancing machine and had to go to a specialist eye clinic for surgery. They had to cut his eye open to remove the shards, he also ended up wearing sunglasses for a week in November as his eye was too sensitive for any form of light:cool::wack:

Yep hold my hands up to a 'should have been wearing goggles moment' :wack:

Was drilling out a stud stuck on an exhaust flange and the drill bit snapped (think it was also carbon steel bit!!) and the end that snapped pinged into my left eye...

I was swearing for about an hour!!!

TBH I should have known better since I did a degree in Optometry! I'm also used to having anesthetic and things shoved in my eye on a daily basis at Uni lol

More progress over the last few days -

Got rid off all the underseal that was on the wheel well -

Andeep you were very right about bare metal rusting quickly! I went back the day after doing some work and washing it off (I also dried it the best I could too) and there was loads more rust starting to form! I was like  omg its a never ending battle!

So i got rid off all the new bits and begin getting rid of more and more...

After what seemed like forever grinding etc I was left with bits that just couldnt be removed due to the complete awkwardness of where it is -

Such as

So I thought it was time to use the Deox Gel

I put it on pretty much all of the back end for 2 reasons -

1. So the bits I would be painting first would be 99% rust free
2. To try and stop it rusting before the next time I go back! :|

I then wrapped it in cling film so it doesnt dry out as much.

This is what I was left with after removing the cling film this morning, this is after 30 odd hours

My first reaction was  It looks like its got worse...

But I began scrubbing and it came off with a little work

After scrubbing for a few hours with brillo pads, a wire brush and a decent mixture of hot water and Surfex HD it was left looking fab!

Yesterday’s work -

I first cleaned all the Deox gel off and gave it a good wash, this took the best part 3-4 hours surprisingly! Made sure it was as good as I could get, then I dried it all off using a drying towel and a heat gun.

I was then ready to de-grease the area that was going to get painted.

The rear of the car behind the bumper was in near perfect condition so I just cleaned it and grinded a few areas that look like a potential risk -

I was then ready to paint -

It says you have to stir the primer well before and during use!

Done -

I thought the Electrox was going to be much different to how it was, I thought it was going to be super thick...it took more than 1 coat in a few places to cover the area as I was getting a lot of brush strokes in the paint so you could see bare metal...I made sure I was constantly mixing it during use as well.

It will probably need another full coat tbh but at least it’s done now and I don’t have to worry about it rusting anytime soon :D
