Hello! Thinking of buying an S15, just one small issue..

Hello! I've got a Mitsi FTO at the moment, but have pretty much settled on a S15 as my next car, esp since my FTO is slowly dying! Only issue is, insurance. While obviously I can get it from specialists etc, since I'm looking to change the car before my current insurance is up and I dont want to lose the no claims bonus, I need to insure it with my current insurer, which is Admiral.

The problem is, they dont appear to know what a Nissan Silvia S15 is. After fiddling about on their site, I SUSPECT they have it listed under 200SX SX-R manufactured from 1999 onwards, 1998cc. Does anyone have any ideas? I have spoken to them on the phone and they have said if it isnt on their system, they cant insure it, but if it is the equivalent, it should be fine (which im hoping this 200sx SX-R is).

I'm kinda hoping it is as they have listed, although when I do the quote on Admiral for that car it is substantially cheaper than the best quote I get on moneysupermarket, by about 50%.

If anyone can help, I would very much so appreciate it, I could wait but I'm not convinced the FTO will last!

They should know it as a silvia spec r there is no 200sx r. ring them and tell them its an import. you shouldnt have any issue insuring it.

First off, Welcome to the club

Second I don't think that Admiral insure import cars at all. When the wife got my S15 for me (with out my knowledge) she insured it with Adrian Flux in my name with the understanding that I would move my 7 years no-claims over once my insurance ran out on the then current car (KA sport  with Zürich who also don't insure imports). Think they called it 'mirroring' the no-claims?. I had 2/3 months left on the KA when I got the S15 and when it was up I asked Zürich to send conformation of my no-claims off to flux and have now insured the KA with them as a second car until I sell it.
I think it may be a case of talking to a specialist insurer and see what they can offer as I would not risk driving around with insurance that may not cover your car. I think if you insured it as a 200SX SX-R and something happened to the S15 they would have to problem getting out of paying you saying you have miss insured it.
How long is left on your current policy and when do you think you will be able to get an S15? as you may end up with only a small over lap.
Hope this helps, this is my experience and I claim to be no insurance expert, but it's how flux sorted it for me so it may be worth a try.

Good luck with you search for your S!% and insurance.:)

hey mate - welcome to the club. there are a few of us on here that came from fto's, i for one was insured with adrian flux on the fto (gpx, veilside kit, loads of mods) and when i went to the s15 i think it went up 120 quid to 700 fully comp something like that with 3 years ncb at the time......you definitely should give them a go. whats stopping you, you will never look back at the fto, these cars are so solid compared to them and surprisingly very reliable even when tuned. good luck finding a good one ;)

Thanks for the info!

I should have made myself clearer, after talking to Admiral on the phone, the person I spoke to could not find a Silvia S15 on their system. I have poked around on their quotation site and got these -

Using 2000 as the year of manufacture got the most options, for both models.

Admiral do insure some imports, as my FTO is one and as you can see, they do list some imports on their listings (they do list import skylines as well etc).

I have until June on my current insurance and intend to get rid of the FTO ASAP, while I like the car it is just not reliable enough and is costing me ££ in repair costs on consistent basis. Plus I want something with some more power. ;) Am hoping to get an S15 within the next month or so, if not a bit sooner, depends on if I buy one already in the UK, or get one imported (am talking to Torque GT about importing one).

when i got quoted by my current insurer, they classed my s15 as a silvia turbo R, s15 never registered at all with them..... wasnt till i quoted the registration to them that they confirmed its the turbo R. this was sky insurance, a so called performance/import specialist!

good luck with the future purchase, you wont regret it!!

I have a feeling the model you are looking at there could be and S14 jap spec? I went to Admiral.com and typed in my number plate and they could not find it so none of it makes sense to me! However I got a price using the settings in the top image and it was not far off what I pay now.

Thanks for all the responses :) I fully intend to goto Sky/Flux etc once my current insurance is up, as I am sure it will be cheaper and less hassle (hopefully!), but for the next few months I will need to stay with Admiral. I have now found the ABI code for the Silvia Turbo R on the Thatcham site and have included that in my mail to Admiral, so hopefully something might come from that!

For anyone else who wants it, the ABI code for the Silvia Turbo R Manual is 355 141 01.

Hello and WTTC

Came from a Manual GPX myself after over 3 years of ownership so i know your be happy with the move up to an S15

Im currently insured with A-Plan and they list it as a Silvia Spec R Turbo. Price wise it wont be much more than your FTO to insure even though the car is worth more and a hell of a lot more crash prone due to being powerful and RWD.

As Dean said good luck finding a good one, i dont see that many good ones pop up imo and these usually go very quickly. I spent 8 months searching for one before i sourced what i was after in japan though i was specific on the colour and full Aero kit.

Whereabouts in Essex anyway ?

Thanks!

I will probably be importing, it does seem like I can get a much better car etc for the money. Just gotta sort this insurance PITA out, might have to wait until the current policy is about to expire and then pick one up. Hopefully will hear from Admiral today though.

Am from Chelmsford, you?

BTW if your thinking of importing try Charlie @ http://www.prodriftuk.com/ as hes only about 1 hour drive from Chelmsford and i am sure he will be happy to go over the process with you.

he sourced mine and i was extremely happy with his service, esp for what i paid him for! Plus i got ALL the documentation and paperwork even though i had already seen the auction report as i was also keeping an eye out in the auctions as well and spotted my car when he did.

Damn..that is tasty. I have to say I am sorely tempted, although I really was looking for unmodified/stock, but that is swaying me..lol

Jez - where do you go for servicing etc? I know a decent mechanic that sorts my FTO, but he is very busy and can usually only do weekends, so a backup would be handy!
I'll checkout that Pro Drift as well, thanks!

if its an owner club car with a record of all the mods then i wouldnt let the fact its modified bother you mate, otherwise you will spend around that on a nice stock fresh import at todays rates and you'll probably do all those mods in time as they are really great improvements that have been made :)

I do all my own work and servicing. Anything that id struggle with id get one of my brothers to help seeing as one works for Aston Martin and both have built race cars numerous times :)

The only garage id trust my car with is Shephards in Baddow tbh.
