Hi, prospective S15 buyer :)

How much was the S15 Spec R when it was new?

Whos the best insurer to go with? Ive done a load of online quotes only 1 recognises S15`s and wanted ?1500 to insure it, the rest stop at the S14.

Ive seen this one i like http://www.torque-gt.co.uk/cardetails.php?c=10

good price? good dealer?

Thanks to anyone who answers.

I think I'm right in saying it was equivelant to ?26k??? Nicely knows the answer to this one I reckon.

Best insurer from my point of view (i.e. most competetive quote) is A-Plan insurance. Call them for a quote, you should be pleased. Also try Sky Insurance, another strong competitor.

That one at Torque is nice... mine's even nicer! :D and is likely to be appearing on the forecourt at Torque in the very near future :) Mine will probably fetch a bit more as it' got the Aero wing and a few other mechanical bonuses too. PM me for details.

Torque-GT... Great dealer. I'm in the process of buying my 3rd car from Mike there now and couldn't wish to deal with a better business. Very good guys indeed. As for price of the S15 you've seen, yes... the price is right.

Welcome by the way! And before one of thr mods asks you, where are you from?

I appreciate a good spoiler but i personally like the S15 without it.

Im from Stoke On Trent.

Have you ever known anyone to suffer turbo failure on these cars? its the only thing that worrys me cause they arent easily available in the Uk. I know they are a solid car but i would like for an owner and someone who knows people with them to say the turbos are strong. I bet buying a replacement would be very expensive.

Welcome

The turbos usually only fail if abused. They are easy to get hold of in the UK. Apex Performance sells the T28BBs off the shelf (for pre 10/2000 S15s) and T28s (post 10/2000 S15s) can be picked-up new and second hand all over the place. Don't think that 'import' = 'difficult to get parts'. Most mechanical stuff is the same as the S14, and parts can be ordered via the recommended sources in 'Traders' direct from Japan for half the UK price and will be with you usually within a week.

Torque are great. Got mine from them too

You'll need to phone up for the best quote for an S15. Check the insurers list here. Personally, I've found Sky unbeatable for price AND decent cover. They give like-for-like on mods, and Agreed Values (quite important on an S15). In fact, they are the only insurer I've found who will do Agreed Values on an import.

I only worried cause ive heard about the people buying those FTO's i see everywhere only available from Japan and then finding out that the parts are extortionate due to their availability.

Care to drop any names of good S15 part sellers? :)

Torque say they have access to any part you want, but how much is a new turbo? I will take a guess at ?1500. am i close?

firstly welcome but i dont think ur in need of thinking so much ahead in if the turbo goes...as we have not heard of the turbo going at all yet on the S15 unless u abuse it as nicely has said

You'd really have to abuse the turbo mate, asuming you don't plan on doing so I shouldn't worry about it. T28BB = solid.

As for FTO's... ppppppfffffff..... they don't even have turbo's :D

more questions...

How many of you have immobilisers fitted or alarms, or do you just get a strong steering lock?. None of the S15s come with factory fitted security do they.

What sort of prices am i looking at for immobilisers, is it a condition of insurance or anything?

thanks!.

The Nissan Anti-Theft System (NATS) is fitted on the Australian S15 only. There is not alarm and immobiliser on the JDMs (and NZDMs?).

The S15 won't pass the ESVA without an immobiliser being fitted, so it is fitted as part of the test if you didn't make prior arrangements for a Cat1 alarm to be fitted.

Just asked the same kind of questions with Mike from Torque GT.

Their website explains quite a lot already but in short, Japan has less car crime (or they punish the criminals better than over here :wack: :D ) so the vast majority of imports including the S15 will not have any sort of alarm system.

Even if they do, they will not be Thatcham Category approved since this is a standard set by the chaps in Thetford?? and as far as I know it is only recognised within the UK.

I'd be surprised if anyone can get an S15 insured without a system that is at least Thatcham Cat 2 otherwise Cat 1.

Torque GT seem to deal mainly with the fitting of Cobra and Toad systems.

Best thing to do is to budget anywhere between ?250 to ?500 for a Thatcham Cat 1 system.

That'd be the guys in Thatcham, rather than Thetford... :p

As I said, the S15 MUST have at least an immobiliser (Cat 2) fitted to pass the ESVA test. Unless you arranged for your own system to be fitted, a Cat 2 will be fitted as part of the prep for the test.

Its a pain really, because Nissan's own NATS has been Cat 1 approved since Version 1, which was fitted on the first S14s. In fact, it was one of the first manufacturer fitted systems to achieve approval.

Yep, if you buy through them :) The ESVA is the special test which an S15 must undergo to ensure that it meets EU safety and emmisions regulations. Basically the vehicle has to match the details of the vehicle which was originally tested for the test report, i.e. standard. The car has to be put nearly completely to standard, tested, then any mods refitted. It is for this reason we strongly recommend people buy a standard, or near standard, S15. Things invariably get missed or fitted incorrectly during this process. Also, you have a much better idea of car's life in Japan if its standard.

Where do you go for the service parts then? Oil filter, HT leads etc. Do UK nissan dealers have access to S15 parts?

Nearly all mechanical parts are the same as the S14, so are available through UK dealers (if you order for an S15 rather than S15). If its basic service items, chances are you'll get them elsewhere too.

If its something over ?50 at a UK dealer, it'd probably be cheaper getting it from Japan via Perfectrun or Feast Japan. Exactly the same parts are usually more than half the UK price in Japan.

Ok, last questions now!!!

If a silvia has the round nissan badge on the back, is it easily taken off or is there holes where it goes into the body which would make it harder to do?

Whats the real 0-60, ive looked on the net and im seeing from 5.5 to 6.9, and whats a Spec S? One site marked it as faster than the R, but everyone talks about the R being fastest.

Any help appreciated....again . :D

the spec s is the non turbo version and is slower,
the 0-60 will differ depending on how much fuel u got in the tank and weight your carryin, and your drivin.
and theres a topic in the mechanical and bodyworks section about removin the nissan badge, with tips. and no pins behind it.

hope that helps.
