Cold Start Grind

This happens intermittently but can't seem to find any information on it.

Let me set the scene..

Its your average dry morning and I'm about to take my car out for a drive.
I start the car, Put my foot on the clutch and pop it into first.
I lift the clutch and GRIND, then gone. It only lasts about a second.

The car is then fine for the rest of the drive and no issues when stopping and pulling off. until its knocked off and left to sit for a bit.

It doesn't matter which gear its in or how much rev's i'm using (believe it happens less with higher RPM though and less if the car idles for longer)
and sometimes doesn't happen (or I haven't noticed anyway)

There is one thing that has me confused, Sometimes I don't need to pull off to hear it, just touch the accelerator.

Any advice?

It had a new clutch fitted before I bought it, I just don't want to cause any damage.

That's a really tough one mate. 2 things its most likely to be,
vct rattle, a common sr20 issue, where the variable valve timing sprocket rattles on start up. Mine does it.
Or it's your clutch release bearing sticking.

Other than that its difficult to know without hearing it.

ya thrust bearing is on the piss

Hope its not the thrust bearing as the gearbox has only just come off for the clutch change.
No issues while driving the car at all, only from a cold start up.

Mine's done this since the day I got it and hasn't caused any issues. Makes a grind when I first pull away then does it no more until the car's sat for a while. As far as i'm aware it's a common thing on S15's.

Hi Guys,

Heres a Video of the grinding, It only grinds from a cold start, seems to be once I select a gear and lift the clutch. but only lasts for a second or two
I can also hear a rattle at low RPM while driving (very faint)

Grind at 0:15 seconds

Noise goes when solenoid is unplugged, does that help?

Thats vvt rattle for sure. Sounds like your solinoid has failed if the noise goes when unplugged. If thats the case then youre lucky as its the cheaper fix

I'm hoping its just the solenoid.

I'm unsure how to know for certain.

£98 for a solenoid if I don't get hit with import ...better than £300+ for the sprocket.

Any locals on here or sxoc that could lend you one for a few mins to test?

vvt rattle doesn't damage anything it's just a touch annoying.

Mine does this as well. Whereabouts is the solenoid, wouldn't mind unplugging and seeing if it stops..?
